Sinister 2012 is a British- American supernatural horror movie written and directed by Scott Derrickson. The movie is about a crime writer Ellison Oswalt and his family.After they move in to a new house mysterious things start to occur.Ellison discovers that a family was murdered in the backyard of the same house and starts to investigate the cases for his new book.
Although the movie got mixed reviews it was commercial hit making room for a sequel.Sinister doesn't rely on jumpscares but its creepy atmosphere and plot twists make it worth a watch.

No.9: The Grudge(2004)


The Grudge is the remake of Japanese horror movie Ju-On.Directed by Takashi Shimizu, the grudge is one of the scariest horror movies even today. The Grudge is about the Williams family, who move into a house a encounter a curse. Karen(played by Sarah Michelle Geller) is an care worker discovers the spirits of a woman named Kayako and her son Toshio.
The Grudge contains very unnerving visuals and jumpscares, which make the movie very uncomfortable to watch.

No.8: It(2017) 

Based on a Stephen King's novel, It is scary enough to give one caulrophobia(fear of clowns) for life and that's because of the nightmarish portrayal of "Pennywise the clown" by Bill Skarsgard. The story is about a entity called Pennywise who comes back in every 27 years and feeds himself on fear. A group of kids have to overcome their own fears to demolish the evil entity for good.
Although the story sounds kinda unrealistic, The jumpscares, scary settings, disturbing visuals, and convincing performances make "It" one of the scariest movies of modern era.


No.7: The conjuring : part 2(2016)
         

 The conjuring 2 is the sequel to the 2013's The conjuring directed by James Wan. Although The sequel is less superior than the original The conjuring, it is scary enough that it will haunt you for days.Based on a true story the movie is about paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, and their encounter with a demonic nun named Valak.

Depending mainly on jumpscares, the conjuring still manages to frighten the audience, and that made it a massive box office hit making enough room for a sequel.

No.6: Us(2019)

        Most of the movies in this list is only good for a little scare.But 2019's Us is going to stay with you for a long long time.Us has the darkest and most twisted storyline in horror movies of recent times.The story is about a family, who goes to a vacation.The family is encountered with doppelgangers who try to kill them.The twisted storyline makes this movie a must watch as it is filled with plot twists.In the end the audience is left with shock and many unanswered questions and have to doubt their own reality.

The Ring(2002) is also a remake of a Japanese horror movie named "Ring".The Ring follows a rich storyline rather than jumpscares. The story is about a cursed video tape.Whoever watches the video tape will die after 7 days. Rachael(played by Naomi Watts) investigates the origin of the cursed tape and she gets to know about a girl named Samara who is behind all of this. The movie does come with plot twists and Samara's pure evil nature is shown.The Ring was terrifying upon its released but now it seems quite less scary after the spoof of 2003's Scary movie 3.

The Exorcist is a American supernatural horror film directed by William Friedkin, released in 1973. The Exorcist is considered as one the classic horror movies and a masterpiece of its genre. The story follows the possession on a 12 year old girl named Regan.Regan is possessed by a supernatural entity called Pazuzu. Two priests come to help possessed Regan and the ending leaves everyone shocked.
The exorcist contains many disturbing sequences which may disturb audiences such as a 360° head rotation and spider walk of a child, but its definitely worth a watch.

Released in 2010 Insidious was a box office hit and praised for its unique storyline.The movie is about a family which moves into a new house.Things started to get worse when Dalton, the younger son falls into coma.Elise, a psychic later reveals that Dalton was not in coma but he was in the realm of dead.The rest is the journey of the father to rescue his son from the realm.Insidious have occasional jump scares but doesn't rely on them.
Insidious is followed by a sequel and two prequels.

The Conjuring(2013) has set a new standard for horror movies and is definitely the best horror movie in this list. Directed by James Wan, The Conjuring succeed to make its own supernatural universe.Not only the story is rich but also the visual storytelling is up to the mark.The Conjuring will make you hold your breath as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren helps a family to free them from a curse. This is the first movie where we encounter the infamous possessed doll called "Annabelle".Unlike many other movies on this list The Conjuring has a happy ending.

No.1:Hereditary(2018) 


Not the best but undoubtedly the scariest movie on this list.Hereditary is a 2018 American psychological-supernatural horror movie written and directed by debuting directer Ari Aster.
Hereditary got totally mixed reviews upon its released. The only movie on this list which doesn't have any jumpscares at all, but the dark settings, convincing performances and extremely disturbing visuals will haunt you for days or weeks or even months. The movie is about the Graham family which faces many unusual happenings after their matriarch passed away.
The movie keeps a slow pace and goes darker and darker as it progresses. The movie also delivers a message on importance of mental health.
