One flew over the cuckoo's nest is a 1975 American drama film directed by Milos Forman based on the novel of same name by Ken Kessey.Considered as one of the greatest films ever made this movie is a benchmark for many movies of this genre.

Plot and presentation:

One flew over the cuckoo's nest is based on a pretty basic plot which is the conflict between two different ideologies however the execution is unparalleled. This movie is set in a mental hospital. The performance of all cast members is top notch. The movie begins with a scene of a beautiful landscape and a car passes by.Later we learn that the main protagonist of the movie Randle McMurphy(played by Jack Nicholson) was inside the car and the landscape symbolises the state of mind of McMurphy.

Another major character of this movie is nurse Ratched(played by Louise Fletcher).Nurse Ratched is one of the head nurses of the mental asylum who shows very little emotions towards the patients. She believed in her own ideology which is everything must go according to the order. This made the atmosphere of the asylum very suffocated however, everything quite changed when McMurphy arrived there.Throughout the movie it is clearly shown he felt the emotions of the patients better than anyone. He tried to upset the established order many times but his attempts failed due to the conservatism of higher power. In a suffocating toxic environment McMurphy was like a breath of fresh air to other patients and he instantly became very likeable to the audience. This movie also features some very likeable characters such as Billy(Brad Dourif), Martini(Danny Devito), Cheswick and others.Another main character of the movie is Chief(Will Simpson), who acts like deaf and slow witted person in the asylum but he is not in real. Soon Chief grows fond of McMurphy and it was him who set him free in the end.

Viewing experience:

One flew over the cuckoo's nest is considered as one of the greatest movies ever made. The acting not only of Jack Nicholson but also of other cast members is extremely convincing and somehow disturbing. The fact that this movie was actually shot in the Oregon state Hospital, which is an actual mental institution gave the movie a very creepy and haunting atmosphere. From the very beginning the movie seems quite comedic but it progresses the plot goes darker and the ending is tear jerking.
